"And it was, in those days, that the land became putrid underneath the rule of Emperor Soniel and the terrible catastrophes he unleashed upon the world."
-J.D. Alazlam, 201 S.O.
In the years following the First Great Tremor, during the reign of Lovelle Soniel after Galbadia had fallen to his armies, poverty struck the land like never before. Lack become a way of life for most and those fortunate enough to be considered wealthy bore a harsher weight upon their back.
The armies of Ordul, the kingdom of Soniel, enforced complete subordination with an iron fist. Those refusing to submit were often subject to brutal torturings, years in prison, and even death. Soniel's wrath knew no end and he delighted in it's exercise.
These were years unfit for men.
The previous war against Galbadia had left much of the land in ruins. Chemical, biological, and magical warfare had left thousands of miles of fertile ground barren. As if that wasn't enough, monsters rapidly increased in number making agriculture difficult. What little men could garner for themselves was to be offered as tribute to Soniel and the common dinner for most families were the scraps left over. The Golden Age of prosperity had long ended; Men were no longer safe.
The instinct to survive and the hunger in their bellies were all that kept men alive.
There were, in those days, rebels opposed to Soniel. Though much fewer in number then the armies of the Empire, their resolve quickened against the tyranny and malice that had cast it's dark shadow over the world. Safeguarding themselves in the natural shelter of Gaia's nature, these rebels quickly became a nuisance to Soniel, a thorn in his side, an obstruction that stood between the Empire and total dominion.
But some would wonder just how exactly Lovelle Soniel was able to raise an army so vast and so powerful after the 7 short years he had been missing. The darker twist being his alleged immortality has now lasted for 138 years and he continues to gain power each day. Rumor has it that Chanda, the Kami that had aided him during the war, is the source behind all that Emperor Soniel is.
If the Kami have truly come unto this world, then it spells both omen and hope for the Gaia.
