Sayen listened to the sounds of her Iron Giant's feet as he walked through the barren land. Times were really hard lately and there was hardly any safe place at all. In fact, it seemed as if the wilderness was almost the same as being in a town or a city anywhere. It had been a while since Sayen had a bite to eat and she was really tired, which is why she had summoned and was perched on her Iron Giant's shoulder resting as they travlled. But the Giant was iron and therefore not very comfortable. She found the dirt to be more comfortable than her giant's shoulder. That's when she decided to set up camp.
It hadn't been a very long time since her guardian had passed on. Only several weeks ago was her foster moogle had been murdered in front of her eyes. She had taken vengeance right away and decapitated the man who murdered him in a a blind rage. Sayen was left to survive this cruel and terrible world on her own.
Looking around she found a good place. The wilderness was never safe so she decided to keep her giant out. If she wanted to she could remain vigilant herself. The viera's ears not only allow Sayen to hear over great distances, but it also allowed her to listen to the voices of the spirit world. It was probably the only good thing she found in being part Viera, but most of the times she wished she was fully human. Soon Sayen had a small fire going. Leaning against a rock, she let her eyes close. In seconds she was fast asleep, drifting in a world she wished she could forever remain in.

There was, in that same wood, three figures and they sat beside a still young fire that burned hot underneath three skewers of freshly caught trout. Nightfall was soon to set in and thus their journey came to a momentary halt as to rest during the hours of the moon's glow. The fires crackled stronger still as the air grew colder and the smoke rose up above the tall trees that hung overhead as if reaching toward the great sky.
The silence of the still young twilight was accented only by the mesmerizing song that went forth from the clay made flute in Taco's hands and it sent forth the essence of an ancient time unto this age of darkness. It was a song that sung sorrowful yet there was much peace in it's weight and it soothed the very restless souls of those who listened. From the chirping crickets, to the crackling fire, all became stilled under the song of memories that went forth from the instrument in Taco's hands.
His two companions, a young Hume girl and a fellow Moogle, sat in silent capture as their minds became filled with a greater essence and such an essence removed them from this plain of consciousness to a place familiar; a place where chaotic thoughts were rendered peaceful. And it was a place covered in purity, where wars and chaos were nonexistent and harmony reigned in a place of greater understanding.
"What are we going to do after?" Her voice was hushed underneath the melodic music that mesmerized even her heart.
"...After?" The Moogle's voice was more so calmed, soft, as the sound reverberated deep within his soul.
Both their eyes gazed unto the fire.
"Yeah... you know... after Taco finds who he's looking for..."
"I.. haven't given that much thought..."
"Yeah... me neither... I guess there'll always be a treasure to be found, right?"
"As long as there's men, there's money. Kupo."
And in the fire they saw the world from the eyes of the sun, the moon, and the eyes of the stars and they say that indeed the world was ugly and full of lies and the world was dark. Yet they saw beauty and it longed to be free.
All was stilled by the song, and also after, when all that held back the silence was the crackling fire that burned benevolently before them, the quivering leaves of the trees as the winds gently brushed against them, and the crickets that sung their own song as though harbingers of the night.
Each took a trout.

Sayen lay against the rock, her chest moving up and down as she took her gentle sleeping breaths under the great night sky up above. All seemed to be peaceful this night, which is more than she could say about most nights. The sleep she was getting now was the most she had probably had for most of the week. All was peaceful, though far from perfect.
Until a large flame erupted from her small campfire. The Tarutaru had extinguished the young half Viera's flames with her own as she teleported to her campsite. But Sayen did not wake, and remained sound asleep. It was her colossal Iron Man which spotted the TaruTaru first. His body stirred at the first sign of alarm. It must protect Sayen from harm. His right leg went forward and it only took two more steps to reach the Tarutaru.
The Iron Man reared himself back as he picked up his sword and raised it to the darkened heavens. Sayen woke up from the sounds of the Iron Man's heavy figure stomping down on the ground causing a mini earth quake and she opened her sleepy eyes. It was really dark. Where had her fire gone? Sayen shivered slightly. It was cold without a fire. She noticed them just as the Iron Man was swinging down his sword on a creature that didn't appear to be a fiend of any kind, especially not from around here. Her eyes widened and she got up, startled. Sayen's arm shot up and her palm faced the two of them.
"Stop!"
The giant froze immediately just as the sword was about to hit the Tarutaru and it remained that way. It let out a low and long sigh, but other than that it stayed completely still for several seconds. Sayen gasped for breath as she realized she had stopped breathing and was now a bit breathless. Why did she shout for him to stop? That creature may be no fiend but what if she/he was still a threat to Sayen? Did she do the wrong thing?
The giant rose up and stepped backwards towards where it once stood, vigilant of all that was around. It had been ordered to stop, but it would be ready to fight again at the word from its master. Sayen remained quiet, not really knowing what to say. Her face went from startled to expressionless in seconds even though she was feeling all kinds of emotions. Sayen got up and hid behind her Iron Giant only bringing her head out so that she could keep her eyes on whatever he/she/it was. She had never seen anything like whatever it was before and could only say the first questions that came to mind: "Who are you? What are you?"

"It's a Carbuncle!" Shouted the voice of a young Hume girl as her simultaneous steps dashed forth with glee filled awe toward the smaller Tarutaru that had appeared amidst the flames.
"No, Aari, stop!"
--- The trout had been well cooked and though it lacked the seasoning of conventionally prepared foods served in the many habitations around the world, it was a delicacy unto the trio nonetheless.
"Boy am I stuffed, ku..." The Moogle, and his female Hume companion, lay on their backs upon the woven blankets carried for such a journey. The flickering stars seen through the branch's openings only brought to mind the memories of a time not long ago.
"Tell me about it... we haven't had a fish that big in a long time, huh Ameri?" The Hume Girl thus turned her head toward Taco, the Warrior Moogle who sat against the treeline to keep watch in the night, "Hey Taco, play us another song, will you?"
"The time for music is over... you must sleep. Tomorrow night we'll reach the Elven Settlement of Anatola." A low voice to preserve serenity and peace. In his mind he thought only of the girl whom he had set out to rescue and his resolve quickened yet more. Though his desire was to continue onward, even in the night, he knew the necessity therein of rest, especially for his companions.
"Anatola... the last time I was there I-" But Ameri's words were halted by the abrupt burst of a small conjuration of flames that flickered and flashed nearby. Immediately then did the trio stand upright and watched as the flames, lasting but only mere seconds, faded into the darkness once more and became as nothing.
"What was that?"
"...Black Magics."
"Wha.... here?! Were not going to go check are we?" It seemed the serenity of the nightside forest had been lost now. Her heart was troubled, as was Ameri's, and though Taco was in their midst, a proven protector unto them against such dangerous things that now filled their mind, their spirits yielded to fear.
"Someone might be in trouble. Lets move quickly." There was no hesitation in Taco's decision. Whether his two companions accompanied him was of no consequence
"He... he's right. Come on... lets go, kupo." Ameri followed soon after.
"B,but-" Yet it seemed as though fear had an even stronger hold on the girl and thus she protested. But Despite her protest, Taco and Ameri both took the Hume girl by the cloth of her shirt and dragged her along with them. The walk itself was not lengthy but the sheer weight of a medium sized and struggling Hume was much for two Moogle's to drag such a distance. Nevertheless, when they arrived wherein the flames had erupted, they looked and beheld a Tarutaru standing in the midst of an Iron Giant.
Iron Giants were not a common sight, in these lands especially, and thus it came into question as to whether or not the Taru and the Giant were on friendly terms. Assuming this encounter was not one of hostility, as there was no battle taking place, the two Moogles decided to test the nature of the Taru and the Giant the only way they saw fit.
Now the Hume girl, whose back had been turned toward the entire ordeal, having been dragged in such a manner, inadvertently found herself thrust outward, from the brush they had taken cover in, and onto the clearing. Is was then that her eyes glistened with joyful merriment as they immediately fell upon the Taru.
"It's a Carbuncle!" ---
The Hume girl did indeed cease her steps. Though such steps were only ceased whereupon she has come but mere inches from the Taru. Downward she knelt, smile remaining with utter happiness at the site, and, with endearment, patted her hand upon the Taru's head.
"Isn't it so cute?" And her voice remained with glee. In such a state, the Hume girl, properly named Aari as established by the Moogle Ameri who stood at the treeline next to Taco, seemed devoid of the knowledge that there was, nearer then one might think, an Iron Giant and a Vierra who perhaps watched in humorous confusion at the abrupt appearance of an overjoyed young Hume.
It seemed serenity was not long lost afterall.

Sayen'seyebrows furrowed when the 'woman' said she wanted to know Sayen's identity when it was clear that Sayen was the one who asked first. Her mouth opened slightly in disbelief of her. She seemed so demanding and full of herself. At least that is as much as she depicted just from the first words she had uttered. And was this creature rhyming? Sayen didn't really mind the rhyming that much.
Then, out of nowhere, a girl who was older than Sayen appeared along with two other Moogles who she could barely see because they remained in the darkness of the forest. Sayen hadn't seen any moogles in the continent yet and it was surprising. The last moogle she saw was her own guardian... dead. They seem to be preoccupied with the woman who had been rude to her... maybe she could make a quick get-a-way.
Sayen gestured to her giant to keep quiet and follow her and she tip toed behind him. As if he could talk.... signs that Sayen was becoming more and more attached to her beast. The giant was in the way of the strangers and so they probably couldn't see her. Maybe. And it was very dark. Even though Sayen was being as quiet as a mouse, her Giant's footsteps were still loud and clear.

“I won’t say this twice, just so you understand. Leave me be now, or you’ll be dead where you stand.”
"Oh! It talked!" Aari glanced backways toward the Moogles, her companions, whom stood in the dark of the night, "It's ok guys! It's just a Carbuncle! And it talks!" Her focus yet again quickened it's fix upon the Taru that stood upon charred wood and ashes.
"My names Aarian but people call me Aari. Have you come to bring us good luck, Ms. Carbuncle?" It became apparent to all audiences that Aari had, intentionally or not, ignored the Taru's previous statement. Perhaps it was the excitement that now coursed throughout her veins as that of a child at a festival or perhaps it was as simple as child-like naivety drawn from a lack of knowledge and experience. Regardless, Aari's well-being was now under compromising conditions and she, herself, remained oblivious to such capabilities of which the Taru are renowned for.
"...Aari, I don't think thats a-" But Ameri's warning was thus shortened whereupon the ground began a trembling that shook the land all around.
"Earthquake!" Quickly then did Aari throw herself upon the smaller Taru as though shielding her from the impending dangers of such a natural catastrophe. Though the tremblings were not as great as to cause any such havoc, the sheer abruptness of the sound and the quaking was enough to startle Aari to her very core.
The thunderous sound, made more so great by the silence of the night, moved forth throughout the dark, hushing that of the cricket's song and the owl's chatter; it was the strides of the Giant. Though in it's flight, the Giant revealed more then it's weight and it's capability of escape, for in the midst of it's steps, therein was beheld, in the shadow of the giant, a small girl; a Hume child not much older then the one Taco had set out to rescue.
Immediately then did Taco's resolve kindle, as a flame fed a feast of dead wood, and it burned hot inside of him for the memories of a time not long passed surfaced upon the shores of his thoughts and he remembered her of whom he set out to rescue.
"You there!" Called Taco with a boisterous voice as he, and the Moogle Ameri, strove closer to bridge the distance between themselves and the focal point of events. "It is unusual for a child to roam these lands... let alone with a Mascab.¹ Have you lost your people?" All the while Taco remained cautious of the Giant and his motives, for most were of a hostile nature and without restraint but this one appeared orderly and tame as though under a Charm. "Don't worry little Carbuncle. Your safe."
But to the Moogles, the small child did not smell of Hume yet the scent of one familiar was upon her, and there was another.

The renown Shantotto's eyes flashed at the very notion of bringing luck to such an ignoramus. Why the Tarutaru put up with such things was beyond her. She took a short breath, preparing to chastise this 'Aari,' when the resounding rumble of the Iron-Clad Cleaver cut her off. The little mage turned to see what had the creature in such a huff when suddenly a crushing force knocked her to the ground, making her lose her grip upon her staff which went flying at the young girl whom had commanded the Iron creature, the gem still glowing violet.
She groaned under the weight of her attacker before whispering quietly.
"Normally, child, you'd find me quite mild. Alas for you, my temper's been riled."
The air around the Doctor flashed, and time seemed to slow for a moment. A thunderous clap filled the area as several bolts of lightning struck down, gracfully avoiding to strike anyone and getting the mage's point across with consummate clarity.
She was Professor Shantotto, a Black Mage of Windurst, the previous Minister of Orastery, and head of the Parliament of Patriarchs before she retired. She would not tolerate this sort of behavior.

Sayen paused, along with the giant, at the sound of the moogle calling out to her. She still had the Giant stay in between herself and them and stayed behind his shadow, just in case. He seemed concern, asking why she was wandering around with the Iron Giant by herself. He asked about her peopple. Her people? Her people were awful. They abandoned her to her father, who also abandoned her with his death. And then her best friend and guardian was murdered. What exactly did he mean by 'people'? Did he mean her family? She really didn't understand what was he asking, but that didn't stop her from thinking about all of the people who were gone or had left her. Sayen didn't have anyone.
"I don't have anyone," she said, rather bluntly. It was true. Sure, it hurt to think about, but why should she shed tears? Unfortunately, the death of her Moogle friend hadn't hit her yet, but she had yet to even realize this. Instead she had gone about wandering by herself thinking she would be fine taking care of herself. But the young girl was far from fine, and she would never admit that to herself due to her great stubbornness.
Sayen saw that the creature with the magic powers dropped her staff due to the other girl jumping on her before. The staff was right at her feet. She stared at it for a moment. Should she pick it up? It wasn't hers to pick up, so maybe she shouldn't... it also looked dangerous with that glowing...
"What do you want from me....?"
Leave me alone....

"I don't have anyone." Said the small Hume girl from amidst the shadow of the Giant. It was after those sullen words were let loose that there came upon then, though striking none, a volley of bolts from the high heavens called down by the smaller Taru though none knew of the will which they followed.
"Where did that come from?!" Aari cried out as she quickly stood to her feet and looked to and fro in fright and preparation for any oncoming dangers that would present themselves. It was not but after a moment that a glimmer of innate intuition convinced Aari to consider the Taru to have manipulated such an element of nature.
"Did you do that?" Meek words spoken softly with an air of faint heated and child-like fear. Aari turned to the Taru once more and gazed upon her smaller image with eyes filled with that of both fear and fearful respect.
"What do you want from me....?" The small girl offered up a cold-hearted question spoken through words withholding tact. It had become apparent, to some small degree, that this girl was one of solitude and had been long lasting in such a state. Compassion became stirred within Taco's heart and such echoed unto Ameri.
"..Do you wander alone, child?" Perhaps the small girl spoke in jest or deception though a stronger voice spoke to clearer still to Taco, for solitude was in the girl's eyes and there was also pain therein.
"Kupo! It's dangerous out there, you know?" Ameri, feeling secure in the presence of Taco though remaining cautious, bridged the gap between them and his own self with but a few steps. When he came to the presence of the Giant he took in the scents of many lands and many people, each telling it's own story though incomplete to the simple Moogle though he recognized the dust.
And there was blood.
"Ku... Taco.. these smell like Mogu." That is, their own kind; Moogles.

Sayen shook her head. She didn't wander alone. She's had the Iron Giant for about a year, and they were very close, or so she'd like to believe. Sayen didn't like the giant at first. She thought him to be too big and too slow, but then, as they traveled together, she grew to like him a lot. He was strong and he protected her. But even she had to admit to herself that was hardly enough these days. He didn't speak, so she had to pretend that he spoke much of the time just to help her feel better.
"No," she said, "I'm never alone... and I'm not afraid of danger. I can handle it just fine."
Suddenly, the other creature summoned a barrage of magic that didn't actually harm any of them. It was probably just to scare them. And she had actually called Sayen a 'companion'. Now she was just saying things. Sayen was definitely no companion of hers. She guessed she was trying to look after Sayen somehow, probably trying to get them to stop hassling her. Sayen remained silent, waiting to see if they would leave.

"No," spoke the young child who stood beside her giant, "I'm never alone... and I'm not afraid of danger. I can handle it just fine." Before anyone one of these three could offer further word or question, there stood in adjudication, the smaller Tarutaru between the girl, her giant, and the Moogles who came to her aid. Pridefully poised and with an even moreso prideful pose, the small woman spoke, and when she spoke, all were lead to listen.
“Alright, children, that’s quite enough. There’s no need to play out The Billy Goats Gruff. I am Lady Karababa, Mage Extraordinaire; with immaculate complexion and perfect hair. And now I must ask this plebian gaggle… why do you harass my companion and her pet, are you salesmen sent to haggle? If you’ve no practical purpose, I’d advise you to depart. My temper’s riled enough, I’d suggest you’d not start.” That smaller woman, the Tarutaru who introduced herself as Karababa, spoke with an air of unrivaled confidence, though such displays of characteristic were met with indifference, for neither of them aimed to feint or display in return.
"Ku... No need to be angry Ms. K A R A B A B A... were only here because we thought someone was in trouble." The ever-so humble Ameri spoke thus unto the smaller Tarutaru, hoping to appeal to whatever sense of compassion or mercy may be found within this Lady Karababa, "..Were sorry about Aari... she's... like that." Of course he could offer no explanation as to why his hume companion behaved in the manner that she did, the apologetic nature of his statement, he hoped, would be enough to appease Karababa's anger.
"...Hmm.." But Taco was no fool of a Moogle. He recognized well the demeanor of those flowing with life and thus he knew there was something else amiss here, now, in this place of meeting and though he could not recognize it in it's entirety, he knew that this meeting was furthest from the presence of coincidence.
"Girl," Stern yet compassionate words went forth with his attention toward the smaller girl who stood beside her giant, "Why do you smell of Mogu?"
And their eyes fell upon her like the soft dim glow of the bright shining moon above.

"Girl, why do you smell of mogu?"
Sayen had traveled with a moogle for a long time and luckily happened to understand his lingo. She did, however, have a lot of trouble speaking in such a way. It didn't matter to her, as long as she understood what she meant. Sayen paused for a moment. It hurt thinking about him a lot. His death was so unfair and sudden, and he didn't even get a proper funeral. She pushed these emotions to the back and blinked.
"Because I once travelled with one," she said rather bluntly, "but he's dead now."
With that, she turned away from him and climbed aboard the Giant's hand. He placed her over his shoulders. Sayen yawned. She was still really tired, she didn't even get to sleep much. All of that random disturbance with those random people. It was really annoying. The giant started walking away, just like she wanted him to do.
